Toddler coloring pages for ages 1–4

Toddlers don't need intricate pictures. They need big shapes, thick lines and something they can name out loud. Here's what to look for, plus printable sets made for exactly that stage.

What makes a page toddler-friendly

Look for outlines at least as thick as a crayon tip, one main subject per page, and very few small enclosed spaces. A toddler colors with the whole arm, so a large lion or a giant letter A is far more satisfying than a busy scene.

Familiar subjects help too. Animals, food and letters give you something to talk about together — "what sound does the lion make?" — which turns coloring into early language practice.

Printing tips

Print on regular US Letter or A4 paper for crayons. If you use washable markers, slightly heavier paper (24–32 lb) stops bleed-through. Print one page at a time so a toddler sees a single, focused picture instead of a stack.

Questions parents ask

At what age can toddlers start coloring?

Many children start scribbling with chunky crayons between 12 and 18 months. Big, bold pages work well from then through about age 4.

What should I use with toddler coloring pages?

Chunky or triangular crayons, washable markers or dot markers are easiest for small hands.
